Potential of Thailand as a Hub of EV Production

At present, electric vehicle (EV) has become an important mode of transportation in Thailand. This is because EV is the most tangible technology for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and global temperatures while other technologies such as hydrogen are still in development or are still too expensive for widespread adoption. Furthermore, the fact that electric vehicles do not emit pollution, can reduce PM2.5 pollution, and help save costs in the long run, has also increased the popularity of electric vehicles, especially in Thailand.

According to Mr. Suroj Sangsnit, the new president of the Electric Vehicle Association of Thailand (EVAT) and the Executive Vice President of SAIC MOTOR-CP CO., LTD., Thailand has the potential to become the world's hub for EV production since eight EV car makers from China have already set up their manufacturing facilities here.

"About 80% of all EVs in ASEAN are in Thailand, so it is evident that Thailand has the highest rate of EV adoption in the region. In addition, we are also China's authorized distributor of EVs to the European Union. It is estimated that the full output of EVs from manufacturing plants in Thailand will reach 500,000 units this year, on top of the existing 2 million units already manufactured.

"In terms of clean energy, some users may be skeptical about the source of the electricity used in EVs. Therefore, it is important that we promote a complete EV supply chain that starts from the credibility of the source of energy, so that we can achieve a true ecosystem of clean energy."
